a vintage rand mcnally elf book today from 1952 ~
the old woman & her pig illustrated by esther friend ~
toxic remembers this story as an oral tale passed down from her great grandma to her older sister to her ~
it's about an old lady who buys a pig but it won't jump over the stile to get home with her ~
so she tries to get a dog to bite the pig to make him jump over but he won't do it ~
an equally stubborn stick won't beat the dog to get him to bite the pig, etc (yes, animal abuse) ~
there's a cat in the story & a butcher the old lady wants hanged with a rope! but finally a reasonable cow helps the chain of events to help the old lady ~
i still remember how fast my sister could relate this story.. lol.. 'cat won't chase rat, rat won't chew rope, rope won't hang butcher, butcher won't seize ox, ox won't drink water, water won't quench fire, fire won't burn stick, stick won't beat dog, dog won't bite pig, pig won't jump over stile & i won't get home for dinner tonight!' ~
