ok here it is, the source of so many nightmares & truly a new vintage horror classic for unsuspecting children.. 1976's baleful beasts & eerie creatures ~
this collection of monstrous stories is out of print & rare, very desirable especially to those who remember it from childhood, because they could never forget it ~
beautifully illustrated by rod ruth ~
beware ~
this book is full of not your run of the mill type of monsters, the yamadan, basilisk, & most notably the patchwork monkey by beverly butler~
do not be fooled, look around the internet & you will find story after story of grown people who still fear this possessed toy.. my now grown son checked this book out of his elementary school library (!) & read the stories as an 8 year old & was so traumatized that he hid the book down on the floor of his closet hoping to never see it or think of it again.. probably not a good idea if you read the story? (it became overdue & we had to find it to return it..) once he was older we simply had to find the book again.. read it as an adult if you dare ~
our copy is signed by charles land author of monster blood..
nightmare in a box by rita ritchie ~
this book is one of our favorites now ~
but seriously, think twice before reading these tales to your kids this halloween ~
i have my own fear of a certain monkey, perhaps thanks to mr stephen king? i used to own this vintage jolly chimp toy that bares his lips & plays his cymbals loudly ~
i used to buy each new stephen king book on the day it was released & read them straight through, oblivious to all else going on around me just like toxic was in her bookworm days.. perhaps it was the story from skeleton crew 1985 lurking in my subconscious? i don't know why, but this toy freaked me out to the point that i ended up selling it on ebay to some other poor soul ~
yikes!!
a more fun post tomorrow for halloween!!!
ghost & toxic
p.s. do you hear bells? ..
