toxic remembers playing with this mattel-o-phone ages ago ~
it's a nice red old fashioned plastic phone ~
only it really works when you insert tiny records into the side ~
old school dialing makes a nostalgic ringing sound ~
the mattel seal ~
this toy requires 2 d batteries (ours works in that the motor runs & there's sound, but the records fail to turn, if anyone knows a fix for this please share!) ~
original instructions ~
from 1965, phone made in japan ~
the records include pretend pals, fairytale folk & talky toys ~
you can even talk to barbie & the liddle kiddles, other mattel dolls & toys, or santa, the man in the moon, or the wizard of oz! ~
the box is great too with cool images ~
you can talk to 40 different characters in this set ~
there were also extra record sets you could get to talk to charlie brown or disney characters ~
back of the box ~
here's a youtube of a 3 little kittens record playing (some were black vinyl, some were white..) ~
tutti? ~
a lost & found toy!

I came across this post because I'm on a mission and I'm wondering if you could help me, since you have the most information of anyone I've seen online. It's a long story, but my dad's parents actually ended up recording the voices for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves on one of these disks and my dad has been looking for one for a long time. I'd like to purchase a copy for him (and, if possible, one for my grandparents as well)for Christmas. However, I seem to be unable to find that specific disk. Would you happen to have any information on this? Thank you so much!

hi kelly ~
there was a disney set you could get for this phone that would most likely be the one you're looking for since this one has snow white but no dwarves.. so if i were you i'd save a search for it on ebay & check the box to have them email you the minute one comes up, i've done this to catch rarer items before they disappear. also look on ebay generally because these discs sell seperately, i've seen them on youtube too. if all else fails, try going to the dis forum (there's a link here in the sidebar) & ask disney fans/collectors there, disney collectors would know more than me i bet!
thanks for visiting ~

hi sandy ~
i wish i could help you & your sister find your lost barbie O phone, i'm also trying to replace all my lost toys from childhood.. i just happened to find this phone at a yardsale & all i know about it is from searches i've done on ebay & the internet. like i told the last commenter, when there's a rare toy i'm seeking i use ebay, if you save a search for the specific item it allows you to check 'email me if this items comes up' so i can get onto it quickly before it disappears..
also you might find one through a specific barbie collector so i'd search for barbie collector forums/sites & pose the question there..
i hope you find one..

I am the boy (well, now grown up and 56 years old) on the box. What a day that was! That blue collar shirt... 3 grown men had to chase my 5 year old self all over the El Segundo studio to get me to wear that shirt! I had never worn a collar and thought it would hurt. Once they got me smiling, I told them the phone (handset I was holding) had no cord. They said they'd "fix it" later. Ah, so they did! I saw the girl in the lobby, but when they took our pictures, it was at different times - I went first, and saw her once more in the lobby when my mom and I were leaving. I made $60 for the experience, but was never asked back. True story, every bit of it. Robert Stern.

robert ~ that's priceless.. lol.. as a socal native myself we once were offered a chance to be extras in 'the killer bees' for $100 but alas, i couldn't get a ride all the way out to the film shoot location :(
i bet the memory's worth more now than that $60..
you can't tell at all that you were photo'd separately either..
thanx for this!

I had a Mattel-o-Phone as a small child. I know I had the Mother Goose set and there were 5 characters. I think two were Old King Cole and Little Miss Muffet. Does anyone know who the other 3 were?

dee, if you click on the photo of the box front above to enlarge it, it shows the pretend pals disc, old king cole, little miss muffet, humpty dumpty & the old woman who lived in a shoe..

Just acquired my first Mattel-o-Phone, "untested". Put in fresh batteries and one of the records, but all I get is a buzzing sound. I think the needle on the record player is damaged. Anybody know how to open one of these? They appear to be riveted together instead of scre3wed.

eileen,
our mattel-o-phone similarly makes a buzzing sound as if the batteries are working, it's making sound but the record doesn't turn or play, so i'm also hoping someone out there has a clue? we didn't try to take ours apart..
thanks for commenting here,
